Storyland Yoga – website
In case you couldn’t tell from reading my blog, I love getting out with the kids and going on “adventures”, but there are times we just need to relax at home too. Cooper, my 4-year-old, tends to be pretty active and… hmm… intense. I’m always on the lookout for calming activities so I was really excited to hear about Storyland Yoga.
Storyland Yoga is yoga for kids ages 3-8 and it includes two stories: Condor Trek and Save the Whale. The stories, which are each about 20 minutes long, encourage kids to use their imagination and guides them into yoga poses to imitate animals. The DVD encourages kids to connect with nature and respect their own health and well-being, and has an eco-conscious message. In addition to the stories, there are bonus features on the DVD including demonstrations of yoga poses with the proper names.
When I received the DVD and told the boys about it they were very excited to try it. So excited that I even got them to clean up all their toys in the living room so we’d have room to do yoga!
John and I did the first story of the DVD with the boys the first time and it was a great family activity. I was expecting a lot of soft, slow talking, but the story is entertaining and exciting, but with calm bits too. There’s no discussion of the proper way to do poses or names of poses (which I think would bore the kids), they’re just worked into the story as animal imitations.
The kids stayed interested in the story for the entire 20 minutes and enjoyed listening to it and trying out the different poses and movements. We decided to save the second story for another time and they boys wound up trying it together without me and John. Again, they stayed interested the entire time. Cooper has even asked me to put on the DVD to help him calm down when he is getting agitated.
I’ve been really pleased with Storyland Yoga and I’m thinking that we may even try to do some yoga for kids at a playdate with friends sometime.
Playful Planet is giving away Storyland Yoga to one lucky Toddling Around Chicagoland reader.
