I’ve been packing lunches for years now for family outings, but I’m always hesitant to pack things like yogurt, applesauce, and smoothies. I’m cheap so I don’t buy the single-serve packages of them so I have to pack them myself. On the rare occasion that I do pack yogurt or applesauce I have to pack small individual containers of it (because who wants to eat out of a larger shared container?), but this is a bit difficult because it takes up so much space in our lunch bag. Now that Cooper’s in school, I’m packing lunches for outings sometimes and school lunches.
I was offered a chance to try out Yummi Pouches and they work great for us. The Yummi Pouch is dishwasher safe, freezer safe, BPA & Phthalate free, and recyclable & CPSC compliant. The pouch opens at the top for filling and then zips closed. You can use a spoon or small cup to fill the pouch, but I’m a little klutzy & spilled, so I use a funnel to fill the pouches and it works great. The cap on the side is easy to open and the kids don’t have any problems doing it themselves.
I pack Yummi Pouches in Cooper’s lunch bag and they fit really well. I’m able to put his water bottle and lunch container in his bag and still fit the Yummi Pouch in front of them.
Yummi Pouches hold 6 ounces, which seems to be a perfect amount for the kids. Cooper and Dexter finish the pouch without complaining about not having enough. I’ve used our Yummi Pouches for yogurt, applesauce, and smoothies. I usually throw a small ice pack in Cooper’s lunch bag to keep it chilled (yep, there’s room for that too), but I have also frozen the Yummi Pouch. It helped keep the rest of his lunch chilled and it was melted enough by lunch time for his to have a slushy smoothie.
I was concerned about washing the pouches, but it hasn’t been a problem. The website has helpful tips on how to fill and clean the pouches. Here are some great tips:
- Yummi Pouches have an expanding bottom gusset, allowing them to be opened up and filled with up to 6 ounces of smoothies and blended snacks.
- To clean your Yummi Pouch, fully expand the bottom gusset and wash with soap and water and a bottle brush, or stand it upside down on the top rack in the dishwasher.
- Yummi Pouches stand up on their own once the bottom is expanded for easy filling through the wide top zipper opening with a pitcher or measuring cup. (I used a funnel.)
Oh, and I bet you’re wondering if the Yummi Pouches leak (because I was). They don’t! I was afraid Cooper would return home with a lunch bag with yogurt smeared all over the inside, but nope. We’ve never had a leak with any of the Yummi Pouches.
