Our experience:
It’s always a bit hectic arriving at the Allstate Arena for a show. It takes a long time to park and get into the arena and then to get to your seats, but we made it just before the show started at 7:00 pm.
The show included several different stories. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Donald act as hosts introducing the parts of the show. The Incredibles came first and the kids were really excited – it’s a favorite movie of theirs. Their part was pretty short and I was hoping they’d return, but they didn’t. Next was Alice In Wonderland (with some particularly impressive double sided, two faced cards that skated backwards and forwards), followed by Peter Pan.
Both boys were particularly excited about Peter Pan. Dexter loved Peter Pan and the crocodile and complained when they left the ice. Cooper loved the flying Tinkerbell and when glitter rained from her wand he said, “Her wand is real! I saw sparkles coming from it!”
There was an intermission at 7:45 for about 15 minutes, and following the intermission the told the story of the Lion King. I think this was John’s favorite part of the show. The animals in it were very impressive – great costumes and props to make it appear that an entire herd of animals was stampeding across the ice. There was also a giant (I mean life size) elephant that was really entertaining.
Snow White, Aladdin, the Little Mermaid, Tangled, and Princess Tiana were all represented in the show. Some had slightly abbreviated stories and others just had a song or two. Some of the stories included very impressive figure skating lifts and tricks, and the special effects were very good, such as the flying carpet in Aladdin that carries Aladdin and Jasmine over billowy clouds (smoke over the ice).
We had four seats for the four of us, but Dexter sat on John’s lap for about half the show. (If you’re looking to save some money, and have a child under 2 you might want to have them sit on a lap instead of purchasing a ticket for them.)
We had a great night. The costumes were impressive throughout the show; they have been very good for all the Disney shows we’ve seen. I was a bit disappointed that the show was so heavy on the princesses. We’ve seen a couple Disney shows that are about the princesses and since this wasn’t one of them I was hoping to see different stuff, but princesses made up at least half the show. I’m sure most of the audience enjoyed that because they seem to be Disney favorites, but not being a girly-girl and not having any daughters I’m a little princess-ed out. Still, I had a great time and so did John and the boys. The show ended at about 9:00 pm and we brought pajamas to change the boys into so they could fall asleep in the car on the way home.
I received complimentary tickets to Disney On Ice presents Dare to Dream. All opinions expressed are my own.
