I’ve always been a reader. As a kid my favorite thing to do was to hide out in my room or some other quiet spot and read books. I probably got it from my parents who were both readers and always read to me, and, of course, I want the same for my kids.
John and I started reading to Cooper before he was born; we read to him when he was an infant, and we made reading books part of our normal bedtime routine for Cooper, and then Dexter when he was born.
There are studies that show that reading to your kids helps them do better in school; it helps them learn language and communication, and helps them learn things like cause and effect and concentration. All of these things are important to me, but there are even better reasons to read to our kids. I like that it’s quiet time we spend together. We all relax a bit and maybe even cuddle together. It’s a great way to help teach or encourage the kids to do new things without nagging them. The kids hear me tell them to use the potty, or relax and go to sleep, or share their toys a million times a day, but when I read a book about a character they can relate to and they’re doing those things it makes more of an impression on them. I also love the conversations we have while reading; the kids often ask questions or tell me stories.
I’m sorry to say that with Cooper in preschool, our busy schedule, and a new baby in the house, I haven’t been reading to the kids as much as I should be. I plan to make reading to the kids more of a priority each day. In fact, I took the LeapFrog Reading Month Pledge to read to my kids at least 20 minutes each day.
Join the LeapFrog “Read 20 Minutes A Day” Pledge to Give Books To America’s Schools

LeapFrog recently sent us the Tag Book Pal and the Toddler Milestones book set to go along with it. Cooper and Dexter have both been excited about it, but it’s really been perfect for Dexter. The books in the Toddler Milestones set are: Count Leap to Sleep, Leap’s New Potty!, How Are You Feeling?, and Things To Do With Baby. It really couldn’t be a better set for Dexter since we’re in the middle of potty training, dealing with tantrums and difficulties getting him to sleep, and we have a new baby in the house. Dexter loves the books and loves that he can “read” them by himself. In fact, he sometimes chooses the Tag books as his bedtime stories so he can “read” to John.
