Our experience:
After checking in we wanted to go to the pool, but realized we forgot the water wings and inflatable ring for the boys. We were very relieved to find out pool noodles and inflatable inner tubes were available at the pool. We had a lot of fun in the pool, but the water was very cold so we only spent about a half hour there; Cooper begged to keep swimming, but his lips were turning blue so we had to drag him out.
The restaurants looked great, but I didn’t want to bring the kids to places that were that pricey or fancy (and I’m pretty sure my mom uniform of jeans and t-shirts wouldn’t fit in with the Casual Sophistication dress codes!). We went to Buona Beef a few miles away for dinner, and ran out to McDonald’s for breakfast in the morning.
We spent the rest of our stay relaxing, playing, and watching tv in the room.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay; the room was very nice and the beds were comfortable. I think it would be a great place to stay without kids, but it wasn’t my favorite place to stay with the kids. The restaurants were a little too expensive and there wasn’t a lot to do.
A few things I didn’t like:
- Infants and children between 2 and 12 are supposed to receive a Westin Kids Club bag of goodies, but we did not receive anything. I did let them know when making reservations that there would be children staying in the room and the kids were both with me at the desk when I checked in. I didn’t ask for the bags or complain about not receiving them, but it would have been a nice perk that I’m sure the kids would have liked. We probably need more goodie-bag type of items like we need a hole in the head so it’s not a huge loss, but I think it’s a bit of a customer service issue to advertise about the Kids Club bags on the website and not provide them to guests.
- There is a fee for internet access in the room (except for some of the more expensive rooms); I believe it was $10/day.
- The pool was very cold. The site says that it’s heated, but we weren’t able to stay in very long because it was so cold & the boys were shivering.
Things I really liked:
- I think the Westin Kids Club is a great idea. According to the website, kids between 2 and 12 get a bag with colored pencils, a make-your-own postcard kit, a world map, and a sun hat, and infants receive a rubber duck, outlet covers, and a nightlight. Unfortunately, we did not receive these when we stayed (see above).
- The beds were very comfortable.
- The pool noodles and inner tubes provided at the pool were a lifesaver (no pun intended) for us. I forgot our water wings and floaties and John and I were trying to decide whether to try to find them in a store nearby (probably not likely since it was Fall when we stayed) or drive home and get them. We were THRILLED to find they were available at the pool.
My suggestions:
- Prices seem to be significantly less expensive on weekends so this is a great place to go if you’re looking for a weekend stay.
- Check out the specials and packages offered.
- Keep this place in mind for a couples getaway or a getaway with the ladies.
I won our overnight stay in a Facebook giveaway conducted by Yorktown Shopping Center. All opinions expressed are my own.
