Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and I Are Catching Up on the Present

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - #StreamTeam #KimmySchmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has arrived on Netflix.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

If you haven’t heard of it, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a Netflix Original show starring Ellie Kemper (The Office), Jane Krakowski (from 30 Rock), and Tituss Burgess (30 Rock). Ellie plays Kimmy, a women rescued from an underground bunker where she lived for 15 years with three other women, all held captive by a man who claimed the world had ended and they were the only survivors. Kimmy decides to start over in New York, where she becomes roommates with Titus, and works for the wealthy (and crazy) Jacqueline.

As a Netflix #StreamTeam member, I received an invitation to watch the first six episodes before they were officially released on March 6. The show looked great from the short promo I saw so I was excited to see it; what I didn’t expect is that I’d binge watch it all in one day! I also found that I can kind of relate to Kimmy, because I’m trying to catch up to the present, too.

Kimmy Schmidt was rescued from an underground apocalypse bunker after being held captive for 15 years; I’ve only been captive half that time.

A little over 7 years ago I was a happily married lawyer who had lots of free time to spend visiting with friends, eating out at restaurants, and going to concerts and shows. I was pregnant, but it was okay because I was thrilled about bringing our baby along to friends’ houses, restaurants, and concerts and shows. No problem! Our life was going to be pretty much the same, just with a baby. HA!

It’s been a little over 7 years since I went to work looking a like this:

Me pregnant with Cooper

And I didn’t come home. Well, okay, I came home, but much later than I expected, and definitely not the same.

I left work to go to the hospital and Cooper arrived about 12 hours later. A couple days later we arrived home, but things were definitely not the same.

Since then I quit my job, had two more kids, and I’ve been to tons of restaurants and shows, but most of them are fast food places and kids shows.

I’m not complaining; I love being a mom, but I do feel a little out of touch with the rest of the world.

Kimmy made a dramatic re-entry into the world. Mine’s going to be a little more gradual. I sometimes have a night out with a close friend, or a date night for a few hours with John, and we even bought concert tickets. This summer I’ll be seeing a show that doesn’t involve songs about the ABCs and doesn’t have any costumed characters dancing around. And I’ll be there with no kids, and with actual grown-up friends! Crazy.

Now I just need my sparkly shoes and I’ll be all set. These are cool now, right?
