About Us

I’m a stay-at-home mom to three boys – ages 9, 7, and 4. I like to stay active and busy so I try to get out of the house with the kids as often as possible.

In my effort to find things to do with the boys, I’ve been surprised at the lack of information to be found, both about things to do in general, but also about the specifics of the places we go. I can generally find hours and admission prices, but often no information about things like whether there’s a place to eat if we bring food or if strollers are practical. That’s why I decided to create this blog so we can share our experiences with other Chicagoland moms, dads, & kids.

I try to be frugal and environmentally friendly, but the big splurge for us in both areas is gas. I’ve always enjoyed driving and I like to do a wide range of activities with my kids. There’s so much to do in the Chicagoland area and we don’t want to miss any of it, so we wind up traveling a lot for some of our “adventures”, as my oldest son calls them.

Cast of Adventurers

Sarah - Toddling Around Chicagoland

Sarah, Mom

Full-time mom & part-time blogger, (almost) always up for adventure, and always in need of a nap. I’m the leader of this toddling (or running) ensemble, but most days I’m just doing my best to keep up with them. In a past life (before kids) I worked as an attorney for kids involved in juvenile court and the DCFS system. In addition to writing for this blog, I often do freelance writing and social media work for other sites or small businesses. I recently wrote a book, The Ultimate Kids Adventure Guide to Chicago, which was published by Reedy Press and will be available beginning May 1, 2017 at local bookstores, and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

John - Toddling Around Chicagoland

John, Dad

This regular guest star appears mostly on weekends & evenings. He’d like to be a full-time adventurer, but he’s forced to spend his days enduring more serious duties at his job and volunteering on various committees for the local school district. When he can adventure with the rest of the crew, his merriment and mischievousness rivals the kids’.

Cooper - Toddling Around Chicagoland

Cooper, age 9

If this ensemble cast has a star, it’s Cooper. He is opinionated and brash and knows what he likes. The life of the party, he never wants a good time to end, and has a seemingly endless supply of curiosity & silliness. His likes include drawing, art projects, and coding on Scratch. His dislikes: being quiet.

Dexter - Toddling Around Chicagoland

Dexter, age 7

This adventurer knows no bounds or age restrictions. He also knows the words “DO NOT CLIMB” do not apply to him. Dexter enjoys playing dress up, chasing his brother, and free space that allows him room to roam away from his chasing family. His sense of humor, fashion choices, and his interests border on the surreal, and he’s a future fashion icon.

Campbell - Toddling Around Chicagoland

Campbell, age 4

With two brothers in center stage, Campbell had a lot to compete with, so he made a very dramatic entrance into the world. The newest member of the cast, he demands attention, cuddles, and constant entertainment. He adores his older brothers and loves playing any game they’ll include him in, and he enjoys building with blocks and playing video games. He has made it clear he will continue this franchise with the same spirit of stubborn adventurousness as his brothers.
