Days and Nights with the Netflix Stream Team

Going for the Gold with Netflix - Toddling Around Chicagoland

I’ve been a Netflix customer for a long time. Originally, we got dvds in the mail so we didn’t have to run out to the video store for movies. Then Netflix introduced streaming and we can’t get enough of it. We cancelled our cable more than 5 years ago and never looked back. We hardly ever watch “real” tv; with the massive selection of movies and tv shows for the kids and adults we rely on Netflix for most of our television viewing.

This year I was asked to be part of the Netflix #StreamTeam so I’ll be sharing some great Netflix streaming options each month. If you’re already a Netflix member you know what a great service it is. If not, let me tell you a bit about how it works.

Netflix is a monthly subscription service for unlimited movies and tv shows. Streaming can be used on your tv with a streaming media player (like the Roku 3 we have) as well as on computers, tablets, and mobile devices. All for just $7.99 a month! A year of Netflix costs us just a little more than one MONTH of cable or satellite.

Netflix allows you to create different profiles for each viewer so you can each create your own watchlist and get personalized recommendations. They also have a kids section and all of the shows and movies are appropriate for kids 2-12. I still have to monitor what they’re choosing since my oldest is only 6, but the ratings and information provided in the descriptions make that easy. What I really like is that I don’t have to worry about the kids seeing the cover art for movies like Saw or Human Centipede.

During the day we use Netflix for kids shows movies. Just to name a few: Phineas & Ferb, Super Why!, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Curious George, Wild Kratts, The Lorax, Escape from Planet Earth.

If we watch Netflix in the evenings or on weekends it’s usually shows or movies for the whole family. Doctor Who, Eureka, Star Trek, Cake Boss, and Kitchen Nightmares are some of our picks.

After the kids go to bed, John and I love to watch our shows. I tend to like crime or dark shows; John and I both like Sci-Fi. There are the really popular shows that I love: Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Weeds, Dexter, New Girl, Parenthood, The West Wing, and X-Files. We’ve also discovered LOTS of great shows on Netflix that we missed when they were originally on tv: Eureka, Warehouse 13, The Killing, The Riches, Fringe, Lie to Me, Jekyll.

I love having these shows available when it’s convenient for me to watch them. And if I’m interrupted, I can pick up where I left off.

I’m looking forward to sharing some great Netflix Streaming shows and movies, especially #NetflixKids choices, with you in the months to come!

Do you have Netflix? What are some of your favorite Netflix finds? (Please share – I’m always looking to discover new shows!)
