Sesame Street Live: Can’t Stop Singing is coming to the Chicago area! It’ll be at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates for performances on April 4-6, 2014. The boys will be so excited about this as soon as I tell them. For now I’m keeping it a secret to surprise them and building up some anticipation with this fun and easy craft.
My boys are pretty obsessed with hats and love playing dress up so I thought making some fun Sesame Street character hats would work for both of those.
I picked up several knit hats (I even got most of them on clearance because spring is coming) and used some felt to add the details to the hats. I keep a large stash of felt for projects, but if you’re going out to buy it it’s really inexpensive.
Since felt can be a bit difficult to cut, I did that part myself. If the kids were a little older I might have let them help. I looked at some pictures of Sesame Street characters and figured out what shapes I needed to create each face. Since the kids already have an Elmo hat we didn’t make Elmo, but we made Oscar the Grouch, Baby Bear, Grover, Ernie, Telly Monster, and Cookie Monster.
I cut out all the shapes and then the boys and I worked together to put the right pieces on each hat.
We used Liquid Stitch, a fabric adhesive, to attach the felt to each hat. The kids needed a little guidance on how to cover all the space evenly, but they did most of the gluing themselves.
Voila! All done! Since we made them the boys have been choosing a new one to wear to school each day.
In a couple weeks I’ll be telling the boys to choose their favorite hat to wear to see Sesame Street Live: Can’t Stop Singing. If you’d like to see the show too, you can purchase them through the Sears Centre, or you can enter to win 4 vouchers to the show right here! A note about the vouchers: You must exchange the vouchers at the box office for tickets. The vouchers are not a guarantee of tickets; exchange them early before the show sells out to guarantee your spot.
This sounds so fun! Weekend craft for sure!!
I love the hats. I’m always on the lookout for new craft projects for my kids, and this one looks great!
I’m not sure if I am creative enough to make the hats but seems easy enough. Our 4 year old son would love them and the show!

This is such a cute idea. I have to keep “secrets” from my daughter too…. Mostly so I can keep my sanity or she will bring it up to me at least 10 times a day!!!
